When the follicles are clear, hair simply has the space and oxygen it needs to grow stronger and healthier, and that’s something I see every day behind the chair.

One thing I always look for is scalp tone. A healthy scalp usually has an even colour for that person’s skin tone. If I see redness, blotchiness or sensitivity, it can be a sign of irritation, product build-up, or imbalance. When the scalp feels calm, hair tends to behave better too ,less itching, less breakage, and better overall condition.

Flaking and shedding are another big one. Some shedding is completely normal ,  it’s part of the natural hair cycle. But persistent flakes or excessive shedding usually mean something isn’t quite right. Sometimes it’s dryness, sometimes build-up, sometimes just the wrong products being used. A healthy scalp should feel clean, comfortable and relatively flake-free.

Circulation is something we don’t always talk about enough. Good blood flow helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to the follicles, which supports stronger hair growth. That’s why simple things like gentle scalp massage, proper cleansing and regular build-up removal can make such a difference.

And honestly, comfort is a huge indicator. Your scalp should feel comfortable,— not itchy, sore, burning or overly sensitive. Often discomfort is the first sign that the scalp barrier is under pressure.

Now more than ever, scalps are dealing with a lot, styling products, dry shampoo, heat tools, pollution, stress, lifestyle factors. As hair professionals, we can’t just look at the hair itself anymore ,  you really can’t treat one without understanding the other.

At Cascata, I always say scalp care is a form of self-care. When your scalp is healthy, your hair doesn’t just look better,  it behaves better, grows better, and feels better.

So if you’re investing in your hair, start at the root. Sometimes a simple scalp check or small routine change can make a bigger difference than people expect.

Remember, healthy hair isn’t a trend. It starts at the scalp, and that’s where we begin.
