1. Wash Your Extensions Correctly
First off, we should take a look at your hair washing routine. While it is true that your extensions should be treated just as your natural hair is, there are a few steps that we recommend to do differently to ensure you get the best out of your extensions.
We recommend you wash your hair extensions every 6-8 wears to keep them looking their best, we don’t recommend to wash as regularly as your natural hair as your extensions do not get the same oil build ups as your scalp and can risk becoming dry. We recommend you use sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner when washing your extensions. Shampoos and conditioners that contain sulphates will strip your extensions of any oils which will eventually dry them out, and contribute to tangling, knots, and breakage. This will leave them to be brittle and coarse. You can find out if your shampoo contains sulphates by checking the ingredients on the label, any ingredient that ends in the word sulphate is a definite no-no!..
2. Avoid Heat Damage
Just like your natural hair, your hair extensions are susceptible to heat damage when you overuse heat on them. As all of our extensions are 100% human hair, they can become brittle and accumulate split ends. This means that once they are damaged, no amount of conditioning treatments will regain the original structure of the hair. But not to worry, we have a solution.. There are many ways to keep heat damage at a minimum and keep your hair extensions in perfect condition while still being able to style them as you like. Here are our tips:
Heat protectant is one of the most important tools to ensure your hair doesn’t become damaged, heat protectant reduces the amount of heat that is absorbed by your hair, creating a barrier between the heat styling tool and the hair, making it less prone to breakage and split ends.
We recommend when using any styling tool on your hair extensions, you set the temperature to a maximum of 180-190 degrees Celsius, or lower. This temperature should allow you to style your extensions with ease, while still avoiding unnecessary amounts of heat on your extensions.
We recommend to also take regular breaks from heat. If you don’t want to give up your glamorous styles just yet, we recommend opting to air-dry your extensions rather than using a hairdryer. This gives your extensions a break from unnecessary heat and damage, air-drying will still allow your extensions to dry perfectly and remain soft, just without the heat. We would still advise every now and then to drop the styling tools, but if all you do for now is air-dry, that’s enough for us!
3. Detangle Gently
I’m sure we’re all familiar with those times where you may have brushed your hair a little too harshly, maybe when it was wet after the shower or even when it was dry, and you’ve seen one too many strands begin to fall out. This is something we also need to be mindful of with our hair extensions!. Your extensions can start to become loose or shed if they are not detangled correctly. It is inevitable for your extensions to tangle, so we have come up with an effective strategy for you to tackle this correctly.
We recommend you invest in a quality wide-tooth comb, for this we recommend our own wide-tooth comb available for purchase on our website. Due to wider spaces between the teeth and larger diameter, it is easier to detangle hair without hair breakage. You should gently detangle from the bottom and work your way up to the top to avoid pulling any hair. We recommend to detangle when dry where possible as wet hair is more susceptible to breakage and fall-out.
4. Store Them Properly
Storing your extensions the proper way can help ensure longevity and quality over time. When your extensions are not in use, we recommend you store them in a cool, dry place, away from any direct sunlight. Over exposure to UV rays and any direct sunlight can damage your hair extensions over time, so we recommend when it is not necessary for them to be in the sun, you store them in a dark place. Storing in a dark place helps to prevent any further damage to the extensions and keeps them looking fresh.
We recommend you keep your extensions in your original net and box when not in use, this will ensure that they do not become tangled or knotted when not worn, and will stay sleek and smooth for your next use.
5. Scheduled Hair Masks
As our extensions are 100% human hair, it is important to treat them as such. Just like your own hair needs some extra TLC from time to time, your extensions need just the same amount of care also to remain at their best health. Your extensions do not receive their own natural oils like your hair does, that is why it is important to ensure they remain enriched and moisturised in other ways. For this reason it is important for you to schedule a weekly or bi-weekly hair mask for your extensions to feel their best.
There are many ways you can deep condition your hair, any of which we are happy for you to use. We recommend using natural products where possible, even possibly experimenting in your kitchen at home and making your own natural hair mask!
