After nearly two decades behind the chair, I’ve learned that when it comes to scalp health, misinformation is everywhere.

Many clients come in doing their best, washing regularly, investing in products, following online advice, yet still struggling with irritation, flakes, oil imbalance, or reduced hair vitality.

Why? Because scalp myths are surprisingly persistent.

Let’s clear things up. Here are the most common scalp myths I hear, and the professional truth behind them.

Myth #1: “Flakes Always Mean Dandruff”

This is one of the biggest misconceptions.

Not all flakes are dandruff. Many are caused by dryness, dehydration, product buildup, or sensitivity , not a medical scalp condition. Treating dry flakes with harsh anti-dandruff shampoos can strip the scalp further, worsening imbalance and delaying recovery.

Professional truth:

Flaking has different causes, and the solution depends on why it’s happening — not just what it looks like. When the root cause is correctly identified, further irritation can often be prevented rather than repeatedly managed.

Myth #2: “An Oily Scalp Means You Should Wash Less”

I hear this often,  and it frequently backfires.

When oil accumulates, follicles can become congested. This may lead to inflammation, irritation, shedding, and long-term imbalance. Avoiding cleansing doesn’t “train” the scalp — it often forces it to compensate.

Professional truth:

An oily scalp usually needs better, more intentional cleansing — not less of it. When oil is properly removed and the barrier supported, balance can be restored and reactive overproduction often prevented.

Myth #3: “Scalp Care Isn’t Necessary If Your Hair Looks Fine”

Hair may appear healthy on the surface, while imbalance quietly develops underneath.

By the time hair becomes weaker, thinner, or sheds excessively, the scalp environment has often been compromised for months.

Professional truth:

Healthy hair is a reflection of long-term scalp support. Proactive care protects the follicle environment and helps prevent future concerns before they become visible.

Myth #4: “Scratching or Exfoliating the Scalp Is Bad”

Gentle exfoliation is not the enemy — aggression is.

A buildup of dead skin cells, excess oil, and product residue can congest the scalp and restrict follicles. Over time, this can disrupt growth patterns and create unnecessary inflammation.

When performed correctly and at the right frequency, scalp exfoliation helps reset and rebalance the environment. It supports circulation, removes congestion, and allows the scalp barrier to function optimally.

Professional truth:

The scalp is skin , and like all skin, it benefits from gentle, intentional exfoliation. When done properly, it helps restore balance, protect follicle health, and prevent longer-term buildup-related concerns before they escalate.

Myth #5: “Tingling or Burning Means a Product Is Working”

This one concerns me the most.

That tingling sensation is often marketed as “stimulating,” but it can signal irritation  especially for already compromised scalps.

Professional truth:

A healthy scalp should feel calm and comfortable. Discomfort is communication, not a success marker. Protecting the barrier is always more beneficial than overstimulating it.

Myth #6: “Dry Shampoo Is Harmless”

Dry shampoo can be useful, but it is not a replacement for cleansing.

Layering it repeatedly without proper washing can lead to buildup, blocked follicles, inflammation, and imbalance.

Professional truth:

Dry shampoo is a tool, not a routine. The scalp still requires regular cleansing with water and appropriate products to remain supported and balanced. Without this, congestion-related concerns can develop over time.

Myth #7: “Scalp Issues Are Just Genetic — You Can’t Change Them”

While genetics can influence scalp behaviour, lifestyle, stress, hormones, product choices, and routine play a far greater role than most people realise.

Over the years, I’ve seen significant improvements simply by adjusting how clients cleanse, treat, and respect their scalp.

Professional truth:

Most scalp concerns can be managed, improved, and in many cases prevented with the right professional guidance and consistent care.

Final Thoughts from the Chair

Your scalp is living skin. It responds to stress, hormones, environment, and how you treat it daily.

After 18 years of working closely with clients, one thing is clear: when we stop believing myths and start truly understanding the scalp, comfort improves, balance is restored, and many common concerns can be prevented rather than corrected later.

At Cascata, scalp health is never an afterthought, it’s the foundation. When the scalp is supported, protected, and balanced, hair has the strongest possible environment to grow healthier, stronger, and more resilient over time.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust that instinct. Early understanding and professional support can prevent small imbalances from becoming bigger concerns.

Here’s to informed care, supported scalps, and hair that truly thrives.
